The addition of a set of Aluminum heads, roller cam and intake has to be a huge improvement over a 289 with an Edelbrock performer cam and a stock cast iron intake. The aluminum heads have to flow huge compared to a stock 289 .One dyno test showed that a stock cam (218 degrees duration) produced the same peak horsepower and up to 15% more midrange power. The midrange power is extremely important for driveability with only two forward gears. There are many engine characteristics which will effect your camshaft selection, so there is no single best camshaft.77mm, 83mm, 85.5 mm: Stock VW engines (aircooled type 1 1300/1500/1600 cc) came stock with these piston sizes, respectively.
